Need Frequent Access to Your Kamloops Self Storage Unit? Find Belongings in Storage More Easily with These Tips

While our Kamloops self storage facility offers 7am to 7pm access seven days per week, if your storage unit is disorganized, those convenient hours can easily be wasted trying to find things. This is especially true for people who access their storage unit frequently.

The following tips can help you save time and effort in finding your belongings in storage.

Tips for a More Organized Self Storage Unit

Making items easier to find in self storage isn’t difficult. It takes just a little planning, the appropriate placement of belongings in storage, and a basic inventory.

Planning

Before you pack things into boxes and move them to your storage unit, ask yourself which items you’ll need to access most and least frequently. Make a list of these items.

Placement of Items in the Storage Unit

When moving items into storage, think “First in, last out” or “Last in, first out”. Following this self storage mantra makes it easy. Items you need to access frequently are best placed at the front of the storage unit (nearest the rollup doors), therefore, they should be stored last. Items you won’t access often are best placed in the back of the unit and thus moved in first.

Self Storage Inventory

A simple inventory of what each box contains and the location of each box in your storage unit is all that’s needed to make finding belongings much easier. Although an inventory takes a little time, it will save you a lot of time and frustration when trying to locate your belongings in storage in the future.

We recommend the following:

  • Label boxes (using labels or a felt pen) so you have an idea of what they contain.
  • Label the front and sides of boxes and place boxes so one of the labels faces toward the front of the storage unit.
  • Make a note of the approximate location of each box as you move them into your self storage unit. A simple notebook or loose leaf paper with two columns will suffice for making your inventory. Write the name of the box (e.g., kitchen cupboards, laundry room, computer electronics) in the first column. In the second column, write the approximate location of the box or item in storage (e.g., front-left, front-middle, front-right, middle-left, middle-middle, middle-right, back-left, back-middle, back-right).
  • When bringing items back into storage, put them back in the location noted in the inventory, or update the inventory if you place them in a different location.
